The novel To Kill a Mockingbird is written by Harper Lee and was produced in the year 1960. After its production, it became an instant hit and as a result won the Pulitzer Prize. The book tells the story of a six year old who lives in an old town of Maycomb, Alabama. The story is set during the great depression and the young girl, Scout Finch lives with her brother, Jem and their father, a widowed lawyer by the name of Atticus. Through the life of Finch and the other neighbors, the author is able to discuss the social injustices that are rampant in the society.

In the neighborhood, there is a reclusive man by the name of Boo Radley who the children in the neighborhood would like to know. Finch together with her brother befriends Dill a boy who comes to visit his aunt in Maycomb each summer. The three are interested in knowing the life of Boo because he rarely leaves his house. It is of paramount importance to note that Boo shows friendly gestures to but he never comes out in person to tell them what he likes. On the other hand, Tom Robinson, a black man, has been accused of raping a white man by the name of Mayella Ewell. Maycomb’s citizens are not happy by the decision taken by Atticus to defend the black man and even children start taunting Jem by calling his father a nigger lover. However, Atticus is adamant and insists that he will defend the accused to the best of his abilities because he does not see anything wrong with it. A group of people that wants to lynch Tom is forced to abandon their mission when the crowd is told by Jem, Scout, and Dill to see the circumstances from Atticus and Tom's perspectives.

Atticus does not want to be present in the trial of Tom but the children are able to watch the proceedings from a colored balcony. Tom is able to prove that the accuser Mayella and her father Bob Ewell, who is known as the town’s drunkard, are both lying. Tom proves that Mayella was seducing him and was found by her father and received a beating. Even after all the evidence, Tom is convicted and he is shot to death while trying to escape from prison. This proves that the justice system is corrupt something that shakes the faith of Atticus in the justice system. Bob is not happy with the Atticus defense of Tom and he opts to humiliate him by spitting on him. Bob goes ahead and attacks Jem resulting in Jem’s broken arm; Jem is rescued by Boo and taken home.

The novel explores the injustices that are experienced by non-whites in America. The citizens of Maycomb believe that Tom is guilty although they did not witness him commit the crime. Because he is black, they do not want a white man, Atticus to represent him in court. Even after Tom proves that he is innocent, the jury goes ahead and convicts him. The conviction is based on the color of his skin. The whites feel that they are superior to blacks and believe that all blacks are criminals.
