The Count of Monte Cristo is an adventures story written by Alexandre Dumas. Along with the three musketeers, it is regarded as the most popular works of Alexandre Dumas. After Picaud is accused of spying for England, he is placed under house arrest. He is moved to a castle Fenestrelle where he works for a very rich Italian cleric. During their stay together, the cleric starts to treat Picaud as his son and he leaves him (Picaud) his fortune after he dies. Picaud dedicates his time on planning how to revenge on the three men who caused his downfall in the first place. Many people believe that they are able to take advantage of other peoples’ situation in to undermine them. Although Picaud is an honest man earning his money from shoemaking, his friends become jealous when they realize that he wants to marry a rich woman. The friends think that Picaud will be punished after they accuse him of spying for England, they do not understand that he is going to be blessed. He is placed under house arrest where he should take care of a cleric. The cleric does not have a family and Picaud is able to win the cleric’s trust. The cleric is wealthy and he leaves everything for Picaud upon his death making him very wealthy. Although it is not good to be revengeful, Picaud does not want to forget what the three friends did to him. He vows to avenge their deeds to him, which he achieves by killing them. In addition to killing the third man, he goes ahead and ensures that his children are doing the wrong things. He recruits the son into robbery whereas the daughter becomes a prostitute. Picaud believes that retaliation is a fair game.
