The relationship between a father and his son is one of the most important things in life. In the novel The Chosen by Chaim Potok, the importance of father-son relationships can be seen through the interaction between Reb Saunders and his son Danny and the interaction between Mr. Malter and his son Reuven. Although Reb Saunders and Mr. Malter have very different types of relationships between their sons, both fathers care for their sons in their own way and try to teach their sons important life skills.

In The Chosen, Mr. Malter shows a great amount of care for his son Reuven in a soft type of loving way. When Reuven was in the hospital, Mr. Malter often would come to visit him to see if he was all right. Also, he was always kind and understanding towards Reuven, even if Reuven did something he didnt approve of. (Potok writes), [Mr. Malter] looked at me and I saw his eyes were suddenly sad. I did not intend to scold you, he said (Potok pg.64).

Danny’s father also uses verbal communication to teach his son a very important life lesson. When Reuven is not sure whether he should become friends with Danny because he is Hasidic, Mr. Malter helps him choose the right path. He says, The Talmud says that a person should do two things for himself. One is to acquire a teacher. Do you remember the other?…You know what a friend is, Reuven? A Greek philosopher said that two people who are true friend are like two bodies with one soul…Reuven, if you can, make Danny Saunders your friend (Potok 74).

Mr. Malter also tells Reuven an important skill to help him in his life with dealing with other people. In one instance he speaks to Reuven and says, What I tried to tell you, Reuven, is that when a person comes to talk to you, you should be patient and listen. Especially if he has hurt you in any way (Potok 64).

Unlike Mr. Malter who shows his to love to his son by being gentile with Reuven, Reb Saunders shows his love to his son Danny by being tough on him. Danny’s father was very strict on making sure his son knew the Talmud inside and out. For example, every Shabbat his father preaches a sermon on the Talmud and purposely makes mistakes in his sermon to quiz his son Danny by asking him to point out what the mistakes are. One time when his son was studying with his friend Reuven, his son didn’t hear any mistakes and his father then turned to his son and said, “…Of course you didn’t hear. How could you hear when you were not listening?” (Potok pg.18).

Where as Mr. Malter uses verbal communication to teach his son, Reb Saunders raises his son Danny in silence except when he is teaching his son the Talmud. He feels that silence teaches Danny more than could be taught by speaking. Even when Reb Saunders and his son Danny go on a trip to Lakewood, they spend an excruciating amount of time together on a bus in complete silence. At one point in the novel, Danny tells his friends Reuven in regard of his father that, He told me once he wishes everyone could talk in silence. (Potok pg.76).

One similarity in the relationship between Mr. Malter and his son Reuven and Reb Saunders and his son Danny is that both fathers look out for their sons. When Reuven came home late one night after being at the Saunders, Mr. Malter was very concerned about him and said, Next time you are out so late you will call, yes? I was ready to telephone Reb Saunders to find out what happened (Potok pg.1).

Reb Saunders also looks out for his son by making sure that all of his son’s friends meet his father’s approval. When Danny told his father about his friendship with Reuven, Reb Saunders tells his son to bring him over for Shabbat. When Reuven asks why does Reb Saunders want to meet with him, Danny says, “…I told him we were friends. He always has to approve of all my friends. Especially if they are outside of the fold.” (Potok pg.115).

The relationships between Reuven’s father Mr. Malter and Danny’s father Reb Saunders is very unique. Each of them has different ways of bringing up their sons and therefore have different relationships with them. Both relationships are similar in that both fathers care for their sons but are different in the way they bring their sons up.

10. Discuss the implications of Maddie’s Statement, “I never want to leave this hill”.

Ethan Frome, written by Edith Wharton, is a tragic romance novel that takes place in the small and simple New England town of Starkfield. Ethan Frome, the main character of the story, faces many trials and hardships throughout his life in Starkfield. However, he has no way to escape these things because he is doomed to remain there forever. It all starts when his mother grows very ill and Ethan is forced to take care of her, and to look after the family farm. This is how Ethan meets Zeena Pierce; she was one of his mothers nurses, and also a distant family member. After Ethans mother passes away, he marries Zeena for lack of anything better to do, and with the hopes of fulfilling the emptiness in his life. Unfortunately, for Ethan, things dont work out exactly the way he had imagined. Five winters after the two are married, Zeena becomes a sick hypochondriac, and again, Ethan is forced to remain in Starkfield to take care of his sickly wife. It is during this time that Zeena hires Mattie Silver her younger cousin. Mattie comes to help Ethan and to take care of the house. Ethan falls in love with Mattie, and Mattie, who really understands Ethan, grows to love him as well. They both realize that they would be happy together, but they are quiet about their feelings, because they are afraid of Zeena.

At this point in the story Mattie and Ethan are not in a good situation. Mattie is in love with Ethan and Ethan is in love with Mattie and they are both miserable. Zeena has returned home from a doctors visit, and she has just told Ethan that Mattie must leave. Zeena feels that she has stayed long enough and that it is time to hire a new nurse to come and live with them. (I am suspicious that Zeena is aware of what may be taking place between Ethan and Mattie.) This news clearly rips Ethan’s heart out. He loves Mattie and is worried about where she will go and what she will do. The only true happiness he has found in his life has been with Mattie.

Against Zeena will Ethan insist’s on driving Mattie to the train station. The two of them drive off together. They stop at a store so that Ethan can buy Mattie a gift. This is truly symbolic of his love for her and his sadness that she is leaving. He picks out a red hair clip for her to wear. They are spotted out together by two of the town’s women. This is the first time that their love has become obvious to anyone in public, and it is clear that Mattie is uncomfortable about the whole situation. After leaving the store they make one last stop to ride a sleigh down a hill. Earlier in the story Mattie has expressed a desire to do this. They ride down three times. At one point Mattie says to Ethan “I never want to leave this hill” To me this shows the painful and miserable state that they are both in. This statement suggests that Mattie literally does not want to leave this hill..ever. Perhaps even wishing to die there. Upon their last shove off of the hill Ethan decides to ride in front of Mattie, which we all know isn’t very wise and dangerous. I could feel the pain and anguish going through their minds and hearts as they pushed off down the hill. The hopelessness of their situation becomes very real, and I can understand why they never want to leave this hill.

livepaperhelp.com

Of Course things never turn out as planned and they don’t die, they end up hitting a tree and becoming seriously injured. Ethan is paralyzed and Mattie was injured so badly that Zeena was now forced to care for her. I see such irony at the end of this story. Mattie did not want to leave. Ethan did not want Mattie to leave. Zeena wanted to be needed. So in all actuality they all got what they wished for.

Break Away & Retreat

In her poem, “The Soul has Bandaged moments“ Emily Dickinson portrays the idea of a women’s soul fighting for freedom and then stepping down from her platform. Dickinson personifies the Soul as a female entity torn between Fright and a Lover. In this poem Dickinson possesses the desire to fight against social standards imposed on women and the stereotypes of feminine behavior. The Soul is rendered helpless by fear at first, but finds the strength to break free. The freedom to love is described as seeming perfection, yet it is not without its dangers. The poem shows the female souls rebellion and the happiness that it brings when she finally breaks down to the “Lover”. This happiness is stifled, however and the cause is not clear. Poem #51 works to suggest that along with unbridled passion come vulnerability, the risk of loss, and thus a new cause for fear. The woman figure in the poem is described as being intimidated by the idea of letting herself go so freely, which would go against her socially taught norms of constraint.

Through her use of imagery Dickinson is able to show how intimidation leads her Soul to feel captured after a moment of break through. Dickinson depicts Fright as a powerful hindering force in the first two stanzas. Its presence leaves the Soul “Bandaged” and “appalled,” both bound as well as weakened and terrified (1-). The idea of shock is further supported by Frights “ghastly” appearance (). Fright is a mischievous “Goblin” with “long fingers” (5-7). Not only is fear a demon, but also one who has a threatening grasp. The grasp of the Fright comes up and it stopped “to look at her” (4) This judging can be related to the strict ways society judged women’s actions. Ambition and the “moments of Escape” were not condoned. Society’s standards impose such a fear to her Soul that it freezes her hair, a sign of femininity. The Soul is so imposed by and scared of the looming Fright that it hinders her natural self. It is Fright that confines the Soul and hinders her unrestrained expression of Love. Dickinson could be expressing all of these feelings of fear to play along with the feminine themes of the time. The word “Lover” implies a sinful sexual relationship and supposedly this would scare an innocent lady.

The poem describes a moment of freedom between feelings of horror and fright and in this moment the Soul is able to be free like sound. This is shown in Dickinson’s use of the word “Bomb” (1). The word is appropriate not only because it is an explosive device but also it could relay the image of a church bell that “swings upon the hours” (14). This image makes the figure more powerful and gives the woman control over time. She has the liberty to decide the hours and counts them in a song. Yet, through her song she also revealing her whereabouts and precipitating her capture. The swinging has a double meaning in that it brings forth images of the gallows and death which is where the Soul will soon return.

Dickinson’s bee metaphor seems to imply the Soul does not know quite what to do with her freedom. The movements of a bee are quick and “delirious borne” portrays the idea that she is too overwhelmed with happiness to make a decision. Like the Soul of a women one would assume the bee enjoyed its place in society. The job of the bee is to pollinate roses, which implies motherhood for a woman’s soul. Yet the rose is described as a dungeon and the bee wants to taste liberty instead of being nurturing to a flower. This indirectly critiques the social expectations of womanhood. In escaping the female soul is able to “touch liberty” and all senses are aroused for the reader to a point where the reader can understand the delirious feelings of the woman. Yet, the freedom seems perfect. Dickinson uses the image of noon to represent the day at its brightest, the sun at its highest, and a feeling of warmth. Paradise, in the same way, is the pinnacle of perfection and pleasure.

The pleasure she feels through freedom lasts only a short while before the Soul submits again to the constrains of social norms. The Soul’s break through contains images that are furthered in the third stanza. The lines, “When, Felon led along, / With shackles on the plumed feet” reinforce the earlier lines “swings upon the hours” and show the double meaning behind the freedom she momentarily felt. She has committed a crime against standards and these moments are “retaken” by her imposers. The tone is one of tired submission. Being “Bandaged” seems more like a caring, healing practice, rather than a binding one (1). The Soul is called a “Felon” (0), perhaps having committed the crime of feeling too much. She is “led along” (0) in shackles, yet being led relieves the pressure of having to choose her own path. Fright’s “Salute” and “Caress” of the Soul become gestures of acknowledgment and affection, and thus reassuring (5-6). The “Horror” indeed “welcomes” her back again (). Captivity here is a haven, as ungoverned “Liberty” seems too threatening (17). By choosing fear, the Soul avoids the possibility of losing all control, being completely vulnerable, and getting hurt.

The rhyme scheme of the poem correlates with the freedom experienced in the third and fourth stanza. In the first two stanzas there is almost perfect rhyme “her” and “stir” and “hair”, “o’er”, and “fair”. Then the poem escapes the confines of rhyme as the Soul escapes her Fright of love. When “retaken” (1) by Fright in the sixth stanza, perfect rhyme returns. Dickinson is able to show through her use of rhyme scheme how she as a poet is constrained in the same way that she is constrained as a lover, through social standards.

The diction in the last two lines signifies the extinction of her freedom. The word tongue extends the song images of the earlier stanzas, yet this time she is without the power of her tongue and therefore song. The bells have stopped ringing and there is no celebration when her captivity resumes. The word “brayed” is associated with the harsh, piercing sound a donkey makes, but the word “not” implies she is silenced beyond the degree of animals. The Soul is forced to be completely silent and submissive in her world of pain.

It is 8 O’clock I am nervous, excited and scared all at the same time. I only have four more hours until I represent Ohio in the semi finals for dancer of the year. While I listen to the song relax on my headphones, I keep going over and over the dance in my head. This day could change my life.

I have danced ever since I have been able to walk. I was just two years old to be exact. Once a week I would put on my size 6 black paten leather tap shoes. I couldn’t wait for my dance lessons to come around. I never knew that when I was eighteen I would be competing in Cleveland to represent Ohio for dancer of the year.

Every day in the studio would practice till my feet hurt. I just had to get my dance polished. I only had one more week until I go to Cleveland to compete. Time after time my teacher would play my song just to stop it in the middle to tell me that my arm was bent, my toe wasn’t pointed or I had missed a tap. I was so tired , but I knew it had to be done if I wanted to move on.

Finally it is judgment day , I got my hair done , my make up on, and then finally my costume was on. I was more then ready to go out and give it my all.

Then the host calls out Amanda Roberts out to the stage. I go out and take my spot, and a deep breath, my music starts and I dance my heart out not even missing a tap or a pointed toe. Brian’s Winter was written by Gary Paulsen. This book’s genre is adventure.

A boy gets in a plane crash and has to find shelter until help arrives. What he doesnt know is that help will not arrive until after winter is over. This story takes place in the wilderness by a pond. The main conflict is the boy trying to beat the odds and fight the harsh winter. The climax is when a gargantious bear attacks Brian’s shelter. Almost everything he had salvaged from the plane wreckage and from the wilderness was destroyed. At the end of the story a plane noticed Brian and came to rescue him. Come to find out, he didn’t want to leave.

The book is about a thirteen-year-old boy who is stuck in the wilderness because he was traveling to his father’s oilrig in Washington. He has to find his own food and supplies. He does find some things from the plane. For example A small rifle, blanket, cooking utensils, and other things. His first big kill when he went hunting was a moose. The second encounter with a big animal was the bear. The main character is Brian, the boy stuck in the wilderness.

The part I liked most was when Brian rigged up his machine to go to the bottom of the pond to get things from the plane. My least favorite part was at the end when they brought up the Indians who had been there the whole time.

livepaperhelp.com

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure books. It has some very suspenseful times and it is sometimes funny because of the stupid things the characters do. The only bad part of the book is the very ending. The Indians don’t really make sense because if they had been there the whole time then they would have met Brian and helped him out. I would rate this story a on the story scale.

The Elements of “A Girl’s Garden”

In “A Girl’s Garden” by Robert Frost, the theme expressed is the unique pleasure of a rural childhood, as well as the girl’s youthful exuberance about the garden she grew. The speaker is a neighbor of the girl, who is now an adult woman living in town. The speaker tells the story, attempting to convey the importance of the garden to the adult woman because of the joy she still takes in reminiscing about her experiences, regardless of the perceived success of her efforts. This is achieved by excellent use of tone, rhythm, and imagery.

The tone of the poem is consistently light and pleasant. From the beginning the girl remembers the experience fondly, as shown in lines -4 “likes to tell how one spring when she was a girl on the farm, she did a childlike thing.” The poem goes on to describe how the young girl asked her father for a garden of her own. The father’s response of “Why not?” and decision to give her a small, walled-off piece of useless land, as well as his comments in lines 1-16 suggests that he was humoring her because he knew it would be quite an undertaking. In lines 7 40 “her crop was a miscellany when all was said and done, a little bit of everything, a great deal of none”, the text at first seems to change tones. Yet the speaker ends the poem by reiterating the woman’s pleasure of telling the story of when she was a “farmer”. When taken into context with the rest of the poem, the tone has not changed. Regardless of the outcome, the theme is that the value was in

the learning experience and the pleasure the woman has even as an adult. The poem is mild-mannered and seeks to take the reader away from their daily life, as opposed to requiring heavy philosophic or morbid contemplations.

The poem is very rhythmic and melodic. It follows a prescribed pattern with every second and fourth lines rhyming. Each section is further divided into four line stanzas, with a similar amount of syllables in each line. The stanzas are not precisely identical, but close enough to allow a musical flow. The speaker reminds us of the age of the child using rhythm by describing her embarrassment at carting a wheelbarrow of manure down the road, which when hearing someone come caused her to run from “her not-nice load” and asking everyone for seed, resulting in her planting “one of all things but weed.” The rhythm continues to support the theme, as well as the tone. By following a clean, simple, and harmonious pattern it continues to evoke a sense of childhood reminiscence and does not obscure the message by being overly complicated.

Throughout the text, the imagery is brilliant, enabling one to visualize the setting, smell the country air, and empathize with the girl. In lines -10 “… an idle bit of walled-off ground where a shop had stood”, the speaker presents a clear image of the location of the garden. Other memorable passages refer to her pushing a wheelbarrow of dung, and planting “begged seed” ranging from potatoes, radishes, lettuce, peas, tomatoes, beets, beans, pumpkin, corn, and even fruit trees on her little patch of land. The word choice is descriptive, but not overly complicated, remaining in adherence to the tone and other

elements. This allows for the utmost impact possible because by allowing the reader to easily visualize what is happening, the events become much more interesting and creates feelings of empathy and delight at the girl’s progress throughout the poem.

Several factors are combined in the creation of a poem; among these are word choice, rhythm, tone, and imagery. These elements may be considered separately. However, for an optimum reading experience every aspect should blend together and complement the others carefully. Just as an artist chooses her palette or a chef seasons his recipes, the poet must consider each individual aspect and how it will enhance the whole poem. “A Girl’s Garden” by Robert Frost is a perfect example of how this is done effectively. The rhythm is steady and melodic, rather than contrived. The words chosen are thoughtfully put together in a way that evokes rich images, without becoming wordy or convoluted. The result is a poem that effortlessly accomplishes the simple purpose of telling a story, which is why “A Girl’s Garden” is still a timeless pleasure for readers and an inspiration to writers eighty-five years after later.

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING ESSAY 18/ The development of a strategic plan is essential to the achievement of organisational goals. Discuss. The development of a strategic plan is an essential part of strategic management accounting. If carried out to its full credibility the organisation will achieve its goals. It is important to note that the strategic plan is set for long term planning, as much as -5 years. It has been established that a strategic plan requires the specification of objectives distinguished between three key elements, forming a hierarchy the mission of an organisation, corporate objectives and unit objectives. These objectives are the first stage of the strategic plan, before the organisation has to ask, and answer, three simple but vital questions; 1) Where are we now? ) Where do we want to be? (long term) ) How are we going to get there? This is where we bring analysis such as SWOT analysis, the Boston matrix, the value chain and the Ansoff matrix into the plan. Corporate objectives relate to the organisation as a whole. They are expressed in financial terms, such as desired profit or sales levels, return on capital employed (ROCE), rates of growth or market share, and are normally measurable in some way. Formulated by members of the board, or directors to be handed down to senior management. United Biscuits corporate objectives in their annual report of 185 were; The most important objective remains the achievement of a minimum return of 0% on average capital employees, with a target return of 5%. Unit objectives relate to the specific objectives of individual units within the organisation, such as a division or one company within a holding company. The unit objectives for costain group plc in their annual report of 186 were; In the UK costain Homes is budgeted to sell 500 homes in 187, - a figure that will put it among the top ten house builders. Before the corporate and unit objectives are incorporated one must start with the mission, and the basic concepts which involve vision statement, mission statement, goals and objectives. The first thing is to establish the long-term strategic aims of the organisation, otherwise known as corporate planning. A vision statement would be drawn up first and is simply a vague sentence expressing the positive effect it will have on society and is often used to say how the world will become a better place due to the existence of the proposal(s). This is often linked with the mission statement, and some companies may even omit the vision and focus only on the mission. This emphasis more on the specific role that the organisation plans. It describes in very general terms the broad purpose and reason for its existence, the nature of the business(es) it is in, and the customers it seeks to serve and satisfy over the long run. The mission statement for international company Virgin is very simple, very brief but informative as to what they wanted to put across, and is simply; The directors aim to develop virgin into the leading British international media and entertainment group.4 Equally important are the goals and objectives. Firstly the organisational goals, the aims that the company strives to incorporate and achieve. These are a more detailed breakdown of what the mission states. They will be defined for different groups of shareholders. As one would expect, organisational goals are established for shorter time frames and are of unquantified sources. Goals can be a little ambiguous, they can be expressed in simple terms, for example, to make a profit, or in a wider area, to increase productivity. Therefore such goals can be taken for granted and so tell us little about the emphasis placed on the various activities of the organisation in meeting those goals. On the other hand one can say how vitally important they are. They provide a basis for planning and management control, guidelines for decision making and justification for the actions taken. The goals that the company set out in their report will be different to that received by the individuals, groups or departments of that same company. The goals will help to develop commitment of these people and so focuses attention on purposeful behaviour providing a basis for motivation and rewards. Fig 1 FORMAL GOALS Personal goals of managers INFORMAL Perceived goals of officially stated GOALS the organisation organisation goals Personal goals of other members of the organisation the reason and purpose of the organisation Figure 1 shows the different types of informal goals that lead to the overall formal goals of the organisation. Inter-linked with the organisational goals are the objectives. These can be interpreted as being the same as goals, but they do differ. The goals are the basis for the objectives and are quantified roles of the organisation. They set out more specifically the goals, the aims to be achieved and the desired end-results. As with the goals, the objectives too will be broken down into different sections within the company. The corporate objectives also need to be broken down into compatible and functional objectives, so as all departments can contribute their part in maintaining the overall specifications. Large companies would have to subdivide the organisation as a whole to make there corporate mission more appropriate. This can be achieved by splitting into functional areas or geographical areas, where the managers are made responsible for all of the functions carried out within their region. The most logical and relevant divisions for strategic planning purposes are called strategic planning units - (Subs). Subs are normally defined as being divisions of an organisation where the managers have control over their own resources and discretion over the deployment of these resources within specified boundaries, - their own mission statement and set of goals. The role of corporate strategic planning in this case is to define the overall corporate values and guiding business principles and to set out the limits of the business, which can be undertaken by the subsidiary units. Here we recall the three simple but vital questions mentioned earlier; Where are we now? Where do we want to be? How do we get there? To help us we start to incorporate analysis and other useful techniques. We start with the SWOT analysis, otherwise termed WOTS UP, which focuses on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the organisation. By taking into account the constraints and opportunities, one can take a look at previous performance, competitors and the rest of the industry, in relation to the holders own company, and then of course one can do SWOT analysis; Fig INTERNAL STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES EXTERNAL OPPURTUNITY THREATS The strengths and weaknesses refer to the internal aspects of the organisation, comparing to the competition and the market place, - what the company is relatively good and bad at doing. The opportunity and threats relate to the external environment factors and the inter-relationship they have. Strengths are those positive aspects or competencies, which provide a significant, market advantage, where the organisation can build upon. This is simply to tell the present market position, size, structure, managerial expertise, physical or financial resources, staffing and skill, image and reputation and lastly the situation (for channel ports and motorways). Weaknesses are obviously the negative aspects in the present competencies or resources of the organisation. Its image or reputation limiting its effectiveness which need to be corrected to minimise the effects. Certain examples of weaknesses could be operating within a particular narrow market, limited accommodation or outdated equipment, high proportion of fixed costs, high level of customer complaints, poor marketing skills or a shortage of key managerial staff. Opportunities are favourable conditions and usually arise from the nature of changes in the external environment. Although the organisation needs to be responsive to the changes, it also has to be sensitive to the problems of business strategy. The changes being, new markets, technology advances, improved economic factors or failure of competitors. The opportunities offer the organisation the potential to develop existing products, facilities or services. Threats, the last in the SWOT analysis matrix. These are the opposite to opportunities, referring to unfavourable situations arising from external environment developments that are likely to endanger the operations and effectiveness of the organisation. One would include changes in legislation, the introduction of a radically new product by competitors, changing social conditions and the actions of pressure groups. The organisation has to be responsive to changes that have already occurred, and therefore plan for anticipated significant changes in the environment, being well prepared for such demands. One has to consider four fundamental issues that are addressed with SWOT analysis. Firstly, financial performance - allowing one to asses the current performance. Secondly, competitiveness - here it is vital to consider the non-financial factors which allow a company to resist competitive pressure, applying it successfully to others. Market input is next, and lastly external environment - these last two aim to highlight external factors, for example, potential constraints, via analysis of the external environment. This must take into account all relevant external environment factors. Once the organisation has completed the SWOT analysis, the question of where they to be in -5 years arises. To help with answering this the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) portfolio matrix will be introduced. This matrix identifies greater strengths and weaknesses by producing, again, four different types of businesses (or products), Dogs, Question marks (or Wild cats), Stars and Cash cows, and is shown in the following Boston Square; Fig Market growth and cash input High STAR ? Low FUNDS CASH COW DOG High Low Market share and cash generation The Boston square is based on a product life cycle and the coincidence of high market share with high profitability; Fig 4 Product Life Cycle question star cash dog mark cow The product life cycle assumes that the cost a unit drops as the volume of units produced increases as a result of improvements in the production process and economies of scale. A typical product developed from concept to market acceptance, through a period of high demand and eventual market decline. Of course not all products follow the same cycle, some never reach the market, and others have a different time scale at each stage of the cycle. Converting the four stages of the product into matrix form produces the above Boston square, giving four different characteristics, specifically chosen. The stars are those products with the best profit and potential, requiring hefty investment to become established products, which generate cash with minimum investment. The question marks, otherwise known as wild cats, are those products requiring a high investment for little return. Market growth is high whilst market share is low, initially funded by income from cash cows. The dogs are those obsolescent products which no longer merit further investment as the market share has been eroded by new developments or fashions. The whole idea of the Boston square model is to highlight that the strategic management of a product, or even a whole industry, needs to focus beyond internal factors to consider market pressures. It also stresses the need to re-invest income to provide long term sources of revenue. It is essential that four strategies emerge from this matrix. Firstly, to build - increase market share, turning question marks into stars. Secondly, hold - preserve market share, ensuring cash cows remain cash cows. Thirdly, harvest- increase short-term cash flow by using cash cows to fund other business products. Lastly to divest - eliminate those businesses whose use of resources is inefficient. It is also possible to use a different type of analysis, namely Porters five-part model, of the existing competitive position. The five parts are established as 1) buyer power, ) supplier power, ) entry opportunity, 4) substitute possibilities, 5) competitor rivalry. These five factors determine how attractive an area of business will be to a company. Fig 5 Porters five factors affecting current level of competition can also be successfully related to his later technique - the value chain, which comes under our third question - How are we going to get there? The value chain looks at the total value added by the industry and by the particular organisation within that industry. The objective of the value chain analysis is to highlight the objectives which contribute most significantly to the total value added and to develop strategies to improve on, or defend the current share of that value added which is gained by the organisation. Fig 6 The value chain Suppliers Organisation Customers Strategy and administration Research and development Design Production Marketing Distribution Customer service According to this concept every firm is a collection of activities that are performed to design, produce, market, deliver and support its product. Another development by porter in 180, is that competitive strategy splits successful strategies into three broad categories; Fig 7 Porters model of generic strategies STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE Low cost position Uniqueness perceived by customers STRATEGIC TARGETS Industry niche Overall cost Leadership Differentiation Particular segment only Focus To be successful across its chosen industry the organisation must either be able to supply the product from the lowest cost case in the industry or be able to command a higher price in the market by differentiating its product. It may not be positive to sustain either of these strategies across the whole industry and so it adopts its third strategic category by focusing on particular segments of the industry where it can command a sustainable competitive advantage. The last part of the corporate planning is the Ansoff product/market matrix. Competitive strategies should be the most precise level of strategic planning since they relate to actions regarding products and markets which are to be implemented to achieve the most specific objectives of the organisation. The organisation here could acquire or develop new products to sell its existing customers, mapped out in the Ansoff matrix. Fig 8 Ansoff matrix PRODUCTS Existing New MARKETS Existing Market Penetration strategy Product development strategy New Market development strategy Diversification The Ansoff matrix indicates the appropriate types of strategies which should be implemented depending on which box the organisation decides to select as its preferred method of growth. The fourth alternative that this matrix suggests is new products for new customers, otherwise described as a diversification strategy or questionable strategy, because it doesnt build on any obvious existing competitive advantage of the business. The other three strategies are examined by their relevant strengths and weaknesses. From all of the analysis shown, and followed with the full capabilities of management in achieving what was set out, one would be able to achieve the original organisation goals. It is possible to see that the development of such a strategic plan, through corporate planning, is a lenghty but well worthwhile for the company. We should note that strategic planning and strategic management accounting has become a vital part of a companies future.

Personal goals have always been important.

Through life and work he has always set goals to strive for. Stephen is now setting new goals because he

decided to return to college. This new set of goals will retain some of the goals that were set when Stephen first went to college right out of high school, some will be new goals that he has now.

live paper help

Stephen’s first goal is to learn different aspects of marketing to help with his current

job. A sales executive position with Barnes Distribution is a vital part of the sales program and obtaining his Bachelors Degree in Marketing would help his performance. Learning different marketing concepts will help in presentations Stephen performs when prospecting for new accounts. The course that is presented to Stephen offers a great deal that will help his all around performance. With this, he hopes that in time he will soon move into a different position that he is qualified for.

The satisfaction of a project completed is of importance to Stephen. One of the goals for him is to finish a degree he never did when he was younger. Starting college right out of high school was maybe not the right thing to do. Stephen has made it a practice to see projects through to completion. He looks at not just setting goals, but setting goals and seeing them through is a sign of maturity. Stephen realizes that he had not reached that maturity the first time he attended college but knows now that the maturity level is there. The degree that he set out to get has never been accomplished

Personal Goals 4

and that is one goal lingering out there to see through. When he receives his degree he will then not only have his much coveted degree he will also have achieved the satisfaction of seeing himself grow as a person because he reached another goal that he had set.

Stephen is also a family man and makes it a practice to set an example to his children. He covets his children and wants to best that life has to offer them. The best way he feels he can enable them to grasp what life has to offer is by leading by example. He can lead by example through the experience he has lived. Aldous Huxley was quoted in the book, Peak Learning (Gross, 168), “Experience isn’t what happens to you. It’s what you make out of what happens to you.” Stephen read that and took that to heart. To him, that made so much sense and wanted to take that and apply it to his life and experiences. Applying that to his life and experiences he looked at so many ways he could set an example for his children to follow. Not only was he able to set an example, he now saw where he could teach then and install the meanings behind the examples he was setting. This, of all goals that he set for himself, he felt was the most important. The mistakes or misjudgments he has made in this portion of his life he could at least talk about and lead his children to learn by. Stephen looks at this goal as the most important goal as it deals with the most important part of his life, his children.

To reach his goal Stephen needs the tools in place to be able to do this. As anyone knows, nothing in life comes easy. He researched and found The University of Phoenix. After hearing about this unique university he started researching the different avenues that they had to offer. Stephens’s time was valuable to his company so he had to take that into consideration. His family time was the most important thing to him. Could he

Personal Goals 5

actually find a way to do the schooling and still hold his responsibilities he owed to his family and job? Yes, he did find that opportunity there. Stephen did realize that nothing comes easy; actually nothing in life comes easy. The online experience offered though presented the ability that he felt was best for this to take place. The University of Phoenix offered the ability to enjoy the ability of having a family and not worrying about work. He also realized that just the opportunity being there from the university was not meaning that it was not easy. He had to apply himself and look at the goals he set for himself and practice everything that took to reach those goals. So far during the classes he has been in he has learned to be open minded, learn from others. There are not barriers out there in life, just obstacles.

To sum it up, Stephen feels comfortable enough to say that he believes that he has found the source to obtain his goals. Can he say that he found the absolute way to do it, no? Without the drive to reach personal goals, you will never find them.

INTRODUCTION

The purpose of this report is to determine and consider the aims of Blue plc and in turn try to achieve a number of objectives. These objectives are to try and improve profitability, addressing stakeholder expectations, expanding the market for Blue plc, outline potential benefits that expansion would bring to stakeholders and also to try and investigate how production could be achieved. This will be done by detailing, step-by-step, the different aspects of the business and how each aspect is achieved at present and how it can be improved.

The Mission Statement is a crucial element in the strategic planning of a business organisation. Creating a Mission is one of the first actions that a business should take. This can be a building block for an overall strategy and development of more specific functional strategies. By defining a Mission an organisation is making a statement of organisational purpose. The specific definition of a Mission Statement is

“A mission statement is an enduring statement of purpose for an organisation that identifies the scope of its operations in product and market terms, and reflects its values and priorities.”

live paper help

A good mission statement captures an organisation’s unique reason for being and encourages stakeholders to pursue common goals. Every company, whether big or small, needs a mission statement. Blue plc’s Mission statement has to reflect the goals of the company accurately as well as summarising it into one or two sentences.

Blue plc’s Mission Statement would therefore be

“ The aim of clothing company Blue plc is to become the leading manufacturer of high quality sports wear to the major retailing companies within the UK and eventually the worldwide market.

The overall objective is to increase product sell-through at retail, strengthen our retailer relationships and enhance and strengthen our brand image and visibility. By doing this, Blue plc will gain a formidable reputation and ultimately increase financial returns for our stakeholders.”

The definition of a stakeholder is

“ An individual or group with an interest in the success of an organisation in delivering intended results and maintaining the viability of the organisation’s products and services.”

Stakeholders play a very important role within the organisations that they have an interest in. They influence programs, products and services. The stakeholder theory states that, for a firm to remain viable it needs to satisfy all stakeholder groups’ interests. The main stakeholders within Blue plc can be split into two different groups. These groups are internal and external stakeholders. Below is a table categorising the two groups and identifying which stakeholders belong to them.

INTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS EXTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS

Shareholders Customers

Company Directors Society

Managers Government

Employees Suppliers

As with all stakeholders, there will be conflict between the different stakeholder groups. For example, managers want the highest possible price to sell their goods in order to make a substantial profit, however consumers want value for money and therefore the lowest possible price.

The stakeholder theory suggests that when setting objectives, the needs of all stakeholders should be considered. Stakeholders vary in their own aims and in their relative importance and influence on the managers who set the objectives. This can lead to conflict of interest.

It is therefore important to realise what each of the different stakeholders expectations are. This will enable a coalition of all groups and provide a common goal amongst them.

The main interest for shareholders would be to get maximum and increasing profits year on year, therefore increasing the financial return that they would receive in dividends. As sales have stagnated in recent years for Blue plc, and the fact that profits have dropped £0.8 million from 001/00 to 00/00, the main expectation for shareholders is to see a rise in profits for the following year. It is up to management to regain the increase in profits and reassure shareholders that the fall is only temporary. If management fail to do this, then shareholders may opt to cash in their shares and remove their interest from the company. This would ultimately have drastic consequences for the company and it is their aim to prevent this.

Directors within the company will have a similar expectation to the shareholders. They will also be concerned with the fall in profits and it is their job to address why they are falling and how to deal with it. It is their duty to devise an action plan that will turnaround the fall in profits and regain an increase in the sales.

It is thought that expanding the company into the continental European market will be the best solution to increasing sales and profits for the company. However, it is believed that such an expansion would not be viable unless the company was able to double its sales and take advantage of economies of scale. It is therefore the Director’s duty to try and convince all stakeholders that expansion will secure the future of the company.

The managers within the company are basically there to ensure that the business ideas will work efficiently and to plan. For example, the plan to expand into the European market will have to be thought through very carefully and strategically, and it is the mangers’ jobs to ensure that this happens. Their expectations are generally the same as the Directors as the future of the company will also determine their own futures.

Employees within company should also fulfil their respective roles to their maximum potential in order to maintain an efficient running on the business. Their expectations of the company is synonymous to that of all internal stakeholders and how they perform their tasks will determine the successfulness of the business.

Business has always had a social dimension also. The concept is based on two key ideas- the moral and ethical responsibilities of businesses, and the benefits of enlightening self-interest. Society allows businesses to exist; therefore businesses have a moral obligation to give something back. Ethics is doing the right thing, but is doing the right thing for one however, the right thing for another? This is the main reason why Blue plc must develop a common interest and goal to both internal and external stakeholders. By keeping everyone happy, then the future of the business is promising. Expanding the business into the European market is in everyone’s best interests as it will bring the business to a new customer market and also increase the profits for the company.

In order to expand into the continental European market, there must be funds available to achieve this. It is generally a common thought that one must spend money in order to make money. Blue plc must raise the capital in order to expand into the foreign market which is estimated to be between £10 and £1 million. A very large and powerful company, for example Microsoft, would have no problem in finding the funds needed. However, for Blue plc, even though it is a profit making business, will need to find other sources of funding for the venture.

There are many sources of financial assistance available to the business. Below shows the main sources of funding that Blue plc could consider. They are split into public sector bodies that support local development and also private sector organisations.

Public Sector Bodies Private Organisations

Government Grants Banks

Increasing No. of Shareholders

Attract more Investors

Businesses looking to seek and obtain Government funding may encounter a number of difficulties. The reason being because the Government tend only to give funding to non-profit organisations for programs and services that benefit the community or the public at large. Companies also cannot apply for Government assistance whenever they please. They must wait until they are announced by a Government agency. However, there is Government agency in Northern Ireland that Blue plc could look to for financial assistance. This is Invest Northern Ireland, a public body that has replaced the Industrial Development Board for Northern Ireland (IDB). There are a number of services that it has to help a business achieve what it is set out to do. In relation to Blue plc, Invest NI would be a good source of financial assistance, however they may be unlikely to provide the capital that Blue plc is looking for, as they are already a considerable profit-making organisation.

Banks are probably the most popular sources of financial assistance for most companies. The reason being is because banks obviously have vast amounts of readily available funds. However, a bank will only provide funding to a business if it sees that it will be able to pay back the money in the future. This therefore means that companies who are looking to a bank for funding must be able to convince the bank that the capital will be used for a successful purpose and that they will be able to payback the interest rates that the bank charges. Interest repayments are one of the reasons why most companies would be put off in applying for a loan from a bank, especially when it is a large amount of money that Blue plc needs.

Another source of financial assistance is to increase the number of shareholders that the company has. One way of doing this is to inform all the current shareholders that the business is planning to extend the company into Europe, and if they invest in more shares, then they will receive a larger dividend in the future. Even though this is a very good way of raising Capital, it may not be enough and other financial assistance must be sought elsewhere.

In order to raise the necessary capital that Blue plc needs to expand into Europe, they must carefully investigate all the different sources available and work out which way is the most beneficial for them. Careful planning and efficient use of resources is the key to this, because if they get it wrong then the result could be detrimental to the business.

There are many factors that affect the location of industries worldwide. The main ones are listed below

Materials

Power Supplies

Transport

Markets

Labour Supply

In the 1th Century, industry tended to be located close to the raw materials that it needed. This was mainly due to the immobility of the raw materials, which were heavy to move due to expensive and inefficient transport. Nowadays, raw materials may be described as “footloose”, as an industry is rarely tied to the location of the raw materials. There is now greater efficiency in the use of raw materials as power is more mobile and transport networks have improved, as has technology. Industries that need to be located near to raw materials are those using materials which are heavy, bulky or perishable or which lose weight or bulk during the manufacturing process.

Early industry also tended to be located near power supplies. Then newer forms of power were introduced and the means of transporting it were made easier and cheaper. Therefore this locational factor has become less important.

Transport is obviously one of the main factors that an industry must consider when locating its business. There are a number things that influence an industry and its transport and the main one is cost. Cost is usually related to distance and the further an industry has to transport its’ goods, the more expensive it will be to do so. The infrastructure surrounding the industry must also be taken into consideration. If the transport networks are bad, then this will hinder and increase the cost of transporting goods.

One of the most important factors affecting the location of an industry is the pull factor of a market. Industries will locate near to a market if the product is bulky, as this will reduce cost of transporting it. Industries will consider a number of factors when locating near a market for example, are there many linkages involved in transporting the goods or does the product become more perishable after processing. Another factor is weather or not the market that it is locating near very large, or very wealthy.

The final factor affecting the location of an industry is the amount of labour supply in the area. Previously, labour was immobile and there were fewer semi-skilled workers. Nowadays there is an increase in the number of part-time workers and the availability of and skills of labour vary from place to place.

In relation to Blue plc, the advantages and disadvantages of different locations must be considered. It must be decided whether setting up industry in Northern Ireland, in the EU or in non-EU countries is beneficial to them.

Advantages for setting up industry in Northern Ireland

· Low rates of Inflation and taxation.

· Highly skilled workforce and more people opting to go onto higher education.

· There is a lot of Government support within Northern Ireland for businesses.

Disadvantages

· Cost of labour is relatively high than that of the EU.

· The location of Northern Ireland is relatively distant from the European markets. This therefore increases cost in transport.

· There is a limited source for raw materials and these often have to be transported from different countries, again increasing cost.

· There is still some political unrest within Northern Ireland and this can prevent businesses from setting up industry there. However it must be mentioned that the country has become a lot more stable over recent years and is becoming more attractive to certain industries.

Advantages of setting up industry in the EU

· The workforce in the EU is generally highly skilled.

· There is access to all the main markets for an industry in the EU. This will reduce the cost in transport and all countries within EU are interlinked.

· There is a lot of support from the EU towards industries within the community.

Disadvantages

· Labour is relatively high costing in most EU countries.

· There is a lot of competition within the EU for many businesses. This generally means it is very difficult to start up a new business within the EU, as the larger competition wipes them out.

Advantages of setting up industry in the EU

· The cost of labour is relatively cheaper than that of the EU

· Raw materials are usually more readily available than they are in the EU

Disadvantages

· There is political instability in many of the non-EU countries.

· Distant from the main European Markets.

· There is a lack of skilled labour and many do not continue into higher education.

· Many countries outside the EU are very poor and do not have the funds to provide decent infrastructure and services.

Blue plc must decide where to set up industry examination of the advantages and disadvantages of each location as has been done above is very important. The best location for the industry would be to set up in the European Union. The reason being is because if the company wants to expand into the EU then transporting costs would be reduced employing a local workforce would look good for the company. As there has been a little profit already generated from the EU, then this proves that setting up business there would be worthwhile.

The main objectives that a government has are to ensure that there is economic growth, low unemployment, balance of payments in equilibrium and low inflation. They achieve this by using two main tools, the Fiscal Policy and the Monetary Policy.

The Fiscal Policy

The Fiscal Policy is the Government spending and taxation for the specific purposes of stabilising the economy. If the Government increases spending then this represents an injection into the economy. Therefore National income will rise which could and most likely will lead to inflation. If the Government raise taxes, then this represents a withdrawal from the economy. National income will therefore fall and inflation will decrease. Governments may raise taxes as an anti-inflationary measure.

The Fiscal Policy can be used to reduce unemployment by creating jobs, but this also may prove inflationary. The policy should therefore be used with care, even when it is being used to create new jobs. It still remains a difficulty for the Government to maintain its aims simultaneously. In relation to Blue plc, the Fiscal policy can be a good or bad thing to the business. If the Government where to increase taxation, then people are going to have less money for luxury goods which is what Blue plc sells. This would cause a decrease in sales and therefore a decrease in profits.

The Monetary Policy

The Monetary policy is the regulation of the money supply and interest rates by the Government in order to control inflation and stabilize currency. If the economy is heating up, the Government can withdraw money from the banking system, raise the reserve requirement or raise the discount rate to make it cool down. If growth is slowing, the Government can reverse the process increase the money supply, lower the reserve requirement and decrease the discount rate.

This will affect Blue plc just like the Fiscal Policy would. If interest rates are increased, public spending will decrease and so too will the companies profits.

Labour productivity is conventionally measured as the ratio of real output to labour input. Although this measure relates output to the number of employees, it does not measure the specific contribution of labour as a single factor of production. Rather, it reflects the joint effects of many influences, including new technology, capital investment, capacity utilisation, energy use, and managerial skills, as well as the efforts of the workforce.

Labour productivity index shows the rate of change in output per person engaged.

Labour Productivity Index = Production index x 100

Employment index

Blue plc management should plan and control production levels and labour productivity. Production levels may be raised by

· Getting employees to work overtime

· Hiring Extra Staff

· Sub-Contracting work to another firm

· Managing the workforce to achieve more output.

If Blue plc want the opposite effect and reduce production levels then they may do this by either cancelling all overtime or reducing the number of employees.

The economic arguments for the Euro are sub-divided into main groups transaction costs, trade competition and investment. Ultimately, abstaining from the Euro means higher costs (as far as transaction costs are concerned) than if we joined. The commissions involved in buying the Euro when trading with European countries will remain and the uncertainty arising from a floating exchange rate will also continue to be apparent. Whilst this is unlikely to make a significant difference for UK businesses buying continental European exports, it could well affect the number of UK exports being purchased by continental European companies. Basically, UK exports will be more expensive to Euro zone countries compared to exports of other Euro zone countries due to the changing cost of buying the pound. The UKs membership in the Euro zone would eliminate these costs. Trade competition refers to the fact that if exports from Euro zone countries are all priced in the same currency then it is easier for companies to see price differences between companies across borders, ultimately increasing competition between companies. In effect, with the lack of tariffs or quotas for import and export between Euro zone countries, it is almost like an integrated single European Economy as buying from a company in a fellow Euro zone country is exactly the same as buying from a company in your own country. This is called price transparency it will become far easier to compare prices across the markets of the Euro zone. The removal of transaction costs associated with exchanging currency has another effect. Intra-European investment flows would likely increase. This means that companies across the Euro zone would benefit from increased investment from other Euro zone countries.

For Blue plc, moving into the European market will therefore result in easier and more cost efficient trading with other EU markets. Exchange rates would also be wiped out as trading will be in the same currency. This would therefore attract more selling between each of the markets that it is interested in as raw material suppliers will not be put off trading with a business that uses the pound.

If Blue plc are wishing to expand their company into the European and possibly the worldwide markets, then they must consider all the economic factors that will face them. If they are operating within the UK alone then there is no problem, as they will be dealing with a single currency. However they will not see an increase in their profits if they do not expand. If they find after expansion that their main market is in Europe then it would be better off locating industry there and operating in a Euro zone. This would ease financial strain on them and other markets would look to them for trade as they deal with the same currency. For a company like Blue plc, expansion is only the naturally progression. The company is growing and expanding into Europe will only ensure that it remains that way. The company may also find that the next step after Europe will be the USA and that is where real power can be achieved. Dominating the worldwide market is the mission statement of Blue plc, as the only way forward is to broaden the companies horizons and expand into the International arena. Careful planning and management is essential for this to happen and tough decisions will have to be made in the near future. The existence of Blue plc is in the way expansion is dealt with and if it is done correctly, the future of the company is very bright.

Jeans maker Levi Strauss & Co. (LS&CO), USA, has revealed errors in its tax returns for 18 and 1 resulting in almost $1 million being wiped off previously reported earnings.

The San Francisco-based business says that in 18 and 1 it mistakenly took the same tax deduction twice for losses related to various manufacturing plant closures. The mistakes are expected to cost the company around $M. in future taxes and force a restatement of previous earnings.

The first casualty of this tax mess is the companys recently released third-quarter 00 results. These will be reduced by around $4.M. to $1.8M.

In addition, whilst the errors did not affect results for fiscal years 18 through 000, they will slice $6M. off net income for 001 and increase that years tax liabilities by $6M. Outside auditors are expected to reaudit the companys 001 financial statements.

LS&CO says that its audit committee will also be looking into the situation.

Levis audit committee has been busy of late. Last month, following an enquiry into allegations made by two former employees, it reported that it had not discovered evidence of tax fraud. It did say, however, that the companys use of various tax reserves in the period 14 to 001 was not supported by sufficient contemporaneous documentation.

1. During the planning and negotiating process various issues were discussed, such as legal issues surrounding the event, parking situation, crowd control issues and sight lines. The main issues discussed in the part we saw was about the location. The entire stage had to be moved from golden gate park and be reconstructed at the speedway almost overnight. They didn’t get the final confirmation on the speedway until a day or two before the event was to take place. They discussed how people would be getting into the event, the issue was brought up that there is only a small road leading into the area, and where would people be able to put their cars.

. Hells angles members were placed on the stage and around the stage to grab crowd members that were going onto the stage. They had a few helicopters in place to be used as med-evac if needed.

. Yes, everyone involved in the deal, from band members to stage crew to event planners, seemed to either be drinking or under the influence of some kind of drug the entire movie.

4. I don’t believe that the kind of music influenced the crowd into anything involving the hells angles. If anything the kind of music played at this show was meant to calm people and bring peace. This show was held during 16 a time when a lot of violent and terrible things were happening around the world, in turn this inspired musicians of the day to write songs to bring a message of peace to the listeners.

5. The event impacted the community in various ways. The main thing obviously was the large amount of people descending on this small rural town. They showed a shot taken from a helicopter of the road leading in, and there were cars parked bumper to bumper for miles and miles.

6. The crowd was mainly composed of a mix of males and females between the ages of 18-0. However there was a broad mix of people, all races, even a few dogs. 4 babies were born as well!

7. I noticed that the hells angles were abusing their power of stage security. At one point in the film one of the hells angles even punches and knocks out the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane! It was apparent that the hells angles had no idea what they were doing when it came to running security. They were arguing back and forth with promoters and band members over the PA system!! What does this show the crowd about how organized you are?

8. I believe that the biggest impact on the event was two things. First the hiring of hells angles as security. These are people who love to get into fights and love to drink. If you wish to run a proper security operation, crowd members should be subdued in as non violent of a way as possible. Also “staff” members should never be drinking on the job. The second issue to me was the quick change in venue. For one, this gave promoters and planners no time to set up a proper area surrounding the stage. They were still building the stage when almost 100,000 people had already arrived. They had crowd members wandering behind the stage, climbing on the scaffolding holding up speakers, crowd members climbing on the stage and running around. All in all it was a huge mess. The crowd control never even got a chance to get started and they ended up trying to play catch up the entire day during bands performances.
